What is Pilates?
Pilates is a functional fitness that emphasizes abdominal strength, postural alignment, and overall bodily awareness, control, strengthening, and flexibility.
Pilates has helped many people overcome and avoid injuries. It does this primarily by strengthening the abdominal muscles to protect the spine and allow more ease of movement in the limbs.

Is Pilates Good for Me?
Pilates has brought strengthening and healing to people with all sorts of bodies, histories, injuries, and movement backgrounds. Joe Pilates developed his method working with injured people in hospitals, and he came to hone it on the bodies of elite (though often injured) dancers.
So the Pilates method has a history of working with all types of bodies. Pilates instructors should be capable of adapting the exercises to a variety of body types. In practical terms, that may mean assisting, adapting, or avoiding some exercises.
It is important to undergo a screening before beginning Pilates (or any exercise routine).
